What Is Achilles Tendonitis?
Achilles tendonitis is an overuse injury of the fibrous tissue that joins the calf muscle to the back of the foot.
Achilles Tendonitis can result in intense pain particularly after activity; and modified gait patterns.
Causes of Achilles Tendonitis
The Achilles tendon can become overused from poor biomechanics or foot function, poor footwear, previous trauma, too much or sudden increase in activity.
People who are more prone to Achilles tendinitis are:
- Athletes – particularly runners or sports people who perform alot of jumping such as basketball and AFL players, gymnasts and athletes.
- People who wear or have worn high heels
- Overweight or Obese people
- People who have suddenly increased their activity levels
- Diabetics and those with arthritis are at a greater risk of developing Achilles tendinitis
